The Ascension Demands The Descent Into Hell

by admin ~ October 19th, 2009

Picture 005The Ascension Demands The Descent Into Hell! And the setting of the captives free! And thus the Great Victory already won!

Consider the following verses from Ephesians, and as you do, watch for the Apostle Paul teaching about Christ’s descent into Hell. And meditate on its meaning:

“Naturally there are different gifts and functions; individually grace is given to us in different ways out of the rich diversity of Christ’s giving. As the Scripture says: ‘When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.’ Note the implication here—to say that Christ ‘ascended’ means that He must have ‘descended,’ that is from the height of Heaven to the lower parts of the earth. The one who made this descent is identically the same person as He who has now ascended high above the very Heavens—that the whole universe from lowest to highest might know His presence. ” (Ephesians 4:7-10)

To live in the true victory and power of Jesus Christ, you have to understand this glorious teaching. Hear the words of a few of the Early Church Fathers (there are many more in agreement! see our Powerful and Meaningful Quotes page for more):

“Christ, caring for the salvation of all, and bursting the eternal gates, opened a way of return to life for the dead bound in chains of death.”

— Eusebius Of Caesarea, 260-341 (or so)

“While the devil thought to kill one, he is deprived of all cast out of Hell, and sitting by the gates, sees all the fettered beings led forth by the courage of the Savior.”

— Saint Athanasius, 293-373 (or so)

“That which happened to the visible tomb of Christ (i.e. its being emptied on His rising), the same happened to Hell the invisible.”

— Basil Of Seleucia, ?-460 (or so)

Now what does it matter? It matters much! For coming to understand how Christ did war His way to victory through the Circuit of the Underworld, provides the means by which you can, through baptism, achieve that same victory. You too can walk unscathed through the Circuit of the Underworld and achieve eternal life in Christ. And receive gifts from on High, where our Lord rules and reigns even today.

We encourage you to search out the truth of these matters. . .

We discuss such teachings regularly in our writings and other Ministry services, especially in our Daily Scripture Reading Service, where each day we go in depth as we wrap the Daily Scripture Reading with an informative and spirit-filled Inductive Bible Study. The amazing love of God is always at the core of each ten minute daily podcast, and the doctrine is always in support of the culmination of God’s love—the Gospel of Salvation, as fully, finally and completely revealed to us in Scripture and portrayed so powerfully in the writings of the Early Church Fathers (and in many of the continuing traditions of the Church).
