Understanding The Christmas Story Explains Why Jesus Never Went To School
by admin ~ December 15th, 2009
There is almost no information in the Bible about Jesus in His youth, other than the information from Luke about Jesus at 12 years of age. Many wonder why this is; and of these, many of them make wild and irresponsible speculations. Some even create stories of what it must have been like for Him to be a school age child attending classes with other youth of His day!
Well, today, during this Christmas season in which we celebrate the Advent of the Kingdom, I want to ask you to consider this question of Christ in His youth. What I hope you will see is that there is no need for speculation–Jesus had no need of “schooling!”
Now how can we say this? Simple–we know from the Christmas story itself, along with the story of Jesus at 12 years of age and the teaching of His own words throughout His ministry, that He was always the great I AM. Christ was always God! From His inception in the womb to His birth to His adolescence to His young adulthood to His full maturity and then on through His ministry, He was always completely God. As such, there was never anything that He could learn that would enlarge the object of His science.
Now the Bible says that Christ did learn, and this is a true statement. Jesus did gain experimental knowledge at each stage of his life. He gained the experience of what it was like to confine Himself to the flesh of humanity; even ultimately experiencing the pain and agony dealt His flesh at the cross. But this type of learning did not enlarge the object of His science, it simply provided the experimental knowledge of what He already knew as God from all eternity.
So it was impossible for Jesus to learn in the sense of enlarging the object of His science, as He was the all-knowing God from the start. Thus, we can reasonably conclude that He would not have been in school. How could we ever imagine that the Lord and God of all creation somehow needed to learn how to add 2 and 2. He created the science of math. He created the number 2. It was He who gave the number 2 its meaning. . .
Yet Jesus, while being God from the start and thus knowing all things and ruling and reigning over all creation from that fleshly body during those 33 years in which He dwelt among us, nevertheless was obedient to the flesh, and thus showed forth His knowledge only as His bodily state was fit to proclaim it.
Thus, as a baby, while Jesus knew all things, He limited His expression of His perfect knowledge of all things to those things appropriate to His bodily state of being. This is what it means that He was “obedient,” for He was obedient to His purpose of becoming Man and to the constraints of men found in the natural progression of the flesh.
During this Christmas season, consider the amazing glory of God in Christ, and the unthinkable love He showed in humbling Himself in the flesh for our sakes. These are the thoughts that will keep you in touch with the true meaning of the season.
